A follow-up on the story in the WSJ about the Hutterites

Posted on September 15th, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, I did a post on a story in the Wall Street Journal about the Hutterite community and the use of cell phones and text messaging. I wrote the post not because it has anything to do with fraud, but because I was just interested in the story. It’s never a bad thing to learn about other cultures and communities.

Jerry Wipf played a major role in the story by taking the reporter to the Hutterite community. Some of his family members were in the pictures and the story. He has a blog: The Hutterite Blog – Setting the Record Straight.

Jerry did a post on the article in the WSJ. Apparently it has caused some hard feelings amongst some of the Hutterites. It appears as though Jerry is an “ex” Hutterite, and he is helping some in the Hutterite community to get cell phones. While some of the more traditional community members are against it, there is also a good argument in favor of the technology – it is helping people keep in contact with one another.

As an example, Jerry cites the tragic death of a young family member. With technology, people were able to be notified quickly and they were able to support one another via technology too.

Take a look at Jerry’s blog. He talks about why he left the colony, and it’s pretty interesting.
