Google Bomb: Internet lawyer John Dozier on Defamation Online

Posted on December 5th, 2009

googlebombThere’s a fine line between the First Amendment right to free speech and defamation, and this has become an increasingly larger problem online. What do you do if you’ve been careful with your reputation personally and professionally, but someone with a vendetta decides to attack you?

Internet lawyer John Dozier is one of the country’s leading experts on the issue of online defamation, and is the author of Google Bomb: The Untold Story of the $11.3M Verdict That Changed the Way We Use the Internet. The book details the Sue Scheff’s landmark internet defamation case that reminded the world that real people are the target of online harassment, cyberbulling, privacy invasion, and Google bombs. A “Google bomb” is an attempt to manipulate the Google rankings related to a particular search term to the detriment of a person or organization.

A Review of Expert Fraud Investigation: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on November 22nd, 2009

My second book, Expert Fraud Investigation: A Step-by-Step Guide, was recently reviewed by my colleague Michael Goldman for The Value Examiner, the magazine published for the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. It’s read by consultants who work in the areas of business and asset valuation, business fraud deterrence, detection, and investigation, litigation consulting, and financial forensics.

I thought Michael’s review was very kind. And for the record, he and I had never met until a few days ago, so I didn’t have a chance to influence his review in any way. I love reviews like this because they really help prospective buyers of the book get a better idea of whether the book has what they need.

Michael’s review…

CNBC Ask the Experts: Bankruptcy or debt settlement?

Posted on February 28th, 2009

otmbkRun on over to CNBC’s site for the personal finance show On the Money… I’ve answered a viewer “Ask the Experts” question about filing bankruptcy versus going through the debt settlement process. Bankruptcy often sounds attractive because it wipes out much of what you owe, but it’s not always the best option and you may not even qualify. Some food for thought…

Expert Fraud Investigation released this week

Posted on February 11th, 2009

My second book, Expert Fraud Investigation: A Step-by-Step Guide was released this week. It is published by John Wiley & Sons, as was my first book, Essentials of Corporate Fraud.

My goal with the book was to offer readers a practical tool to help them investigate fraud. There are plenty of books available on the subjects of forensic accounting and fraud investigation, but they’re not like this one.

Employee theft and the economy

Posted on January 22nd, 2009

It’s popular to say that because of the economy, employee theft will go up. While that may happen, there’s actually no way of proving it one way or another. ABC News quoted me in this story: Stealing a Slice of the Company Pie.

I elaborate on these comments in an article I wrote for the Wisconsin Law Journal:  Fraud and the Economy: Correlation or Coincidence?

What is your opinion?
