{"id":1111,"date":"2007-11-19T15:23:24","date_gmt":"2007-11-19T20:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sequence-inc.com\/fraudfiles\/2007\/11\/19\/sec-fines-have-gone-down\/"},"modified":"2008-02-03T23:23:40","modified_gmt":"2008-02-04T05:23:40","slug":"sec-fines-have-gone-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sequenceinc.com\/fraudfiles\/sec-fines-have-gone-down\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC fines have gone down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fines levied by the Securities and Exchange commission have fallen to their lowest level since 2002. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aJKCRZoXEz7I&amp;refer=home\">Bloomberg reports<\/a> that &#8220;fewer billion-dollar accounting-fraud cases&#8221; and &#8220;new policies for fining companies&#8221; are to blame.<\/p>\n<p>For the year ended September 30, the SEC issued $1.6 billion in fines, compared to $3 billion in each of the two previous years.<\/p>\n<p>One expert says this is because the cases being investigated by the SEC are smaller and that the SEC has adopted a new stance on penalizing companies, since the penalties ultimately hurt the investors.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the larger fines in 2006 were issued against American International Group (AIG) and Fannie Mae, at $800 million and $400 million, respectively.  2007&#8217;s fines include $50 million against Freddie Mac, $45 million against ConAgra Foods, $81 million against HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy, and $208 million against Deutsche Bank.<\/p>\n<p>It is also reported that the SEC brought 656 cases in 2007, which was a 14% increase over 2006.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/tracy\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/coenen\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/tracy+coenen\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/tracy+l+coenen\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/fraud+investigation\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a>   <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/fraud+investigator\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/sequence\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/sequence+inc\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/fraud+examiner\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/fraud\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fines levied by the Securities and Exchange commission have fallen to their lowest level since 2002.
