Brett H. LaChappelle of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, has been busy telling the internet about himself. One of his recently published biographies<\/a> describes himself as a special needs aide working with people with autism and intellectual disabilities. It discusses his education, coaching certificate, gardening, woodworking, travel, favorite movies, reading habits, exercise, RV camping, and even his appreciation for 1980s music.<\/p>\n

Aren’t these details interesting? Too bad Brett left out on of the most interesting and important details: His felony conviction. The omission is particularly significant because LaChappelle’s criminal case involved his employment with the City of Two Rivers, where authorities accused him of stealing more than $20,000 while working for the Parks and Recreation Department.<\/p>\n

How does someone like Brett make off with $20k of the community’s money? He’s an old pro at this. Just ask his previous employers who may or may not have found themselves with some missing money.\u00a0In 2021, prosecutors charged LaChappelle with 37 felonies related to purchases made with city funds while he was a supervisor in parks and recreation.<\/p>\n

According to the police investigation, old Brett used his employer’s credit card for personal purchases and altered receipts to make the purchases appear legitimate. When questioned by police, he said he has been a liar since he was a small child, and that he stole because of “gluttony and greed.”<\/p>\n

In June 2022, LaChappelle pleaded no contest to four felony charges. The remaining charges were dismissed but considered at sentencing. He was sentenced in September 2022 to six months in jail, four years of probation, and restitution. He was permitted to serve the confinement portion of his sentence on electronic monitoring and was later released from probation early after paying restitution. Yes, he got off easy.<\/p>\n

Brett doesn’t mention any of this in his new biography. Instead he introduces himself as a special needs aide who provides “compassionate holistic care.” It says he creates a supportive environment and helps clients achieve their goals. The biography also describes an associate degree in biblical counseling and a Level I coaching certificate.<\/p>\n

Then we get to find out a little too much about Brett’s personal life. He grows vegetables and flowers, builds outdoor furniture, makes crafts with a Cricut machine, watches dramas and romantic comedies, reads mysteries and nonfiction, likes biking and walking, and enjoys RV camping. Wow! What a great guy.<\/p>\n

There’s plenty of room to describe Brett’s hobbies, but clearly not enough room to talk about his felony conviction.<\/p>\n

What’s interesting about this career shift to help people with intellectual disabilities is that Brett is working with vulnerable people. He has a history of theft, and I’m concerned about the vulnerability of his clients. LaChappelle’s biography emphasizes his service, the concept of trust, and his community involvement. But he simply cannot be trusted.<\/p>\n

And now there is another curious addition to Brett LaChappelle’s resume. On LinkedIn, he lists himself as a “private investment strategist.”<\/p>\n

Again, this is quite curious given his criminal history. LaChappelle’s felony case involved money, dishonesty, falsified documentation, and abuse of the financial trust his employer placed in him. And he has the confidence to publicly call himself a “private investment strategist”??? This description is likely intended to give the appearance of financial knowledge and experience. But who on earth would take financial advice from this felon? Someone who hasn’t done their research, I suppose.<\/p>\n

Brett has been busy publishing favorable biographical materials about himself on multiple websites. He goes to great lengths to describe his background in counseling, his volunteer work and community involvement, and his personal interests. But nowhere does he mention his crimes, since this strategy is all about reputation management.<\/p>\n

You’ve found what you need: He is a felon for his crimes involving the theft of more than $20k from a community organization.
