A grand jury has indicted Democratic Representative William Jefferson of Louisiana on corruption charges. The 16-count indictment includes charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes, depriving citizens of honest services, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Racketeering Influence Corrupt Organization, and money laundering.

In August 2005, law enforcement found $90,000 in Jefferson’s freezer during a raid of his New Orleans house. He has been under investigation for accepting bribes.

Last year, one of Jefferson’s aides pleaded guilty to bribery and greed to help the prosecution. Vernon Jackson, a CEO of a technology firm in Louisville, has also admitted to trying to bribe Jefferson. There also exists a vidoe of Jefferson accepting a bribe from a company that asked for help to win business in Nigeria.
